First Scotland – Rheinland-Pfalz Life Sciences and Biotechnology Conference
SULSA are delighted to present the First Scotland-RLP Life Sciences and Biotechnology Conference in collaboration with Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz. This event is primarily aimed at Early Career Researchers in RLP and Scotland to support their international network development and research progression.

Conference Overview
This event is primarily aimed at Early Career Researchers in Rheinland-Pfalz and Scotland to support their international network development and research progression.
The event is supported by the Scottish Government, Universities Scotland Research and Knowledge Exchange Committee and the Biotechnology Coordination Office of the State Government of Rhineland-Palatinate.
The conference, which will be held online on Tuesday 15th March 2022, provides an excellent opportunity for Early Career Researchers from both regions to connect and present their work, building on the success of world-renowned Rheinland-Pfalz based biotechnology company, BioNTech SE. The opening plenary talk will be followed by five concurrent symposia on the following topics:
- Biology of Mental Health and Resilience
- Understanding the Molecular Mechanisms of Cancer
- Novel Approaches and Techniques to Understanding, Diagnosing, and Treating Disease
- Understanding the Molecular Mechanisms of Neurodegeneration
- Development of Vaccines and Advanced Therapies
Each symposium will feature 15 minute presentations from established academics from both regions on their career path and the collaborations that elevated their research.
Aim of Conference
This conference is designed to inspire and connect Early Career Researchers from across Scotland and the federal state of Rheinland-Pfalz to foster collaboration under the joint Declaration of Intent signed by ministers in 2021.
The Scottish Government, SULSA, and Rheinland-Pfalz are working closely together to initiate a program of events leading from this conference, with the intent of building cohorts of Early Career Researchers to strengthen collaboration across universities and industry in both regions. A call for seed funding for collaborative projects is due to be launched at the event.
